In the article from Statenews.com, McKown speaks of the term Socialnomics and how it is now important to realize the identity that you have online and be able to market yourself with a paper resume and an online one built out of social networking as well.

In the realm of social networking and news coming from places you would never imagine, i find it important that news organizations are always planning whats next and trying to stay on top of the evolving and quickly sprouting industry of technology. By the Sun creating an app that works with the iPad is showing that they are still fighting strong in the world of news and showing that a working paper can go online and be successful.

Annu Subramanian says that is not indeed the truth.

“Several jobs have opened up in the fields of journalism and media that did not exist before. Multimedia producers, who translate news stories to multimedia projects for online news sources, are in high demand, as are community managers, who must understand how best to incorporate social media into traditional news sources. Aspirations of partaking in the journalism of the pre-Internet world are “delusional,” Luckie says. “There’s no such thing as ‘traditional journalism’ anymore, especially for young journalists.”

With new jobs opening up for multimedia journalists it is important that journalism teachers expand the mind of young journalists to the world of online journalism. Class like converged journalism, or online writing need to not only take the place of traditional journalism classes but definitely be offered in addition to them.

The article also states that employers want to see that you have the ability other than to just report and write, you have to have more. You have to be an up to date modernized technologized journalist.

The article featured recent journalism job ad’s and the additional things they are looking for in potential people to hire: 

ABC 7 Los Angeles, online entertainment producers: “must possess strong writing and copy-editing skills; excellent computer skills, including knowledge of keyboard shortcuts; experience working with social networks such as Facebook and Twitter as well as Movable Type blogs …” 
The Orlando Sentinel, reporter: “…This reporter also acts as our social media coordinator, helping develop strategies for our online interaction with readers via Twitter, Facebook and other social media tools.” 
Hillsdale (Mich.) Daily News, seeking newshound: “Must be comfortable with the Internet, Facebook and/or Twitter.” 

The article also mentioned that they are not necessarily looking for social media experts but for social media students who are learning and staying current on the trends.

I found this coverage in depth and interesting because not only did it have a great sideshow of picture and videos but on the side it had a poll for readers to answer what to do with the killer whale. It was interesting for them to decide to poll readers on this controversial issue and it was something that i have not seen much of done. This multimedia aspect allows readers to give their input and feel more connected to the site, the reporter, and the issue at hand. I also think this is a positive way to express reader comments. Although the poll is anonymous there is structure to it so the reader feedback is defined and also applicable to the issue that is reported on. A detailed poll like this one allows to express how they are feeling in an organized and productive way.

According to a BBC News article that discussed the amount of journalists killed in 2009 and in jail, they reported that half of the journalists jailed were online journalists. China, the worst for jailing journalists, has 24 in jail.

The article states,

“The growth of new media – such as blogs and social networking sites – had created new opportunities fight repression and censorship, they said.

But CPJ officials warned that states like China and Tunisia can sabotage such technologies and turn them against journalists.”

It is hard enough to accept the fact that journalists across the world are getting killed and jailed every year for what they report but it is even harder to believe that the ones spreading information online are being attacked even harder. I found this article to be a tough reality check and an even more in-depth look at the future of journalism and the new means of reporting. Viewing the correlation between 2009 being a deadly year for journalists and the rise in social media outlets puts a lot into perspective.

BBC, one of the most respected news organizations in the world is not requiring journalists to get buddy buddy with twitter.

 Peter Horrock, the director of global news for BBC said in the article, “  ”If you don’t like it, if you think that level of change or that different way of working isn’t right for me, then go and do something else, because it’s going to happen.  You’re not going to be able to stop it.”

He is basically telling his staff to jump on this concept because it is not going anywhere. If anything, it is just the start so the change in way journalists report and the extra steps they should be taking to now post online to sites such as Facebook and Twitter for their readers.

Ironically, the article also states an instance where Horrock mistakenly posted private info on someone else twitter page thinking it was private but it was not.

This article is just reassuring proof that twitter is becoming part of journalism. Better yet, it is something that is becoming a launch point for how journalism will be in the future.
